On the 27th March 2019, Alyn Smith, SNP MEP, had a standing ovation and loud applause at the European Parliament when he called on his colleagues to ‘leave a light on for Scotland’.

Mr Smith is well known for powerful speaking and his speech at the European Parliament begged the EU to not “let Scotland down”.

Back in 2016, he said: “Colleagues, there are a lot of things to be negotiated. We will need cool heads and warm hearts, but please remember this: Scotland did not let you down.

“Please, I beg you, chers collègues, do not let Scotland down now.”

In 2019, he made another speech insisting that Scotland was a “European nation”, and that Brexit was a “tragedy” and a “self-inflicted disaster”. He begged the EU ‘don’t close the door on us now’ and said: “Cher colleagues, I’m not asking you to solve our domestic discussions. I am asking you to leave a light on so we can find our way home.”
