The family of a murdered Ayrshire teen say they have doubts on whether her killer should be released from prison after a parole board yesterday postponed their decision.

John Wilson was jailed for 12 years back in 2008 after stabbing Michelle Stewart to death outside a shop in the village of Drongan.

Speaking after the latest hearing on whether Wilson should be released, Michelle’s family posted a statement on their facebook page which read:

“The parole board has failed to reach a decision today (27th November 2023) and have deferred a decision until a later date. This is likely to be either mid-December or in the New Year!”

In 2018, Michelle’s family set up a campaign group in her name. The aim is to give victims’ relatives more rights and a louder voice during the parole hearing process.

Michelle attended Auchinleck Academy before she was killed.

In a previous article on the Clyde Insider, the family expressed their concerns about Michelle’s killer being released back into the community.

Yesterday, the family also reached out to the Clyde Insider to explain how they were feeling following the latest announcement:

“Given that they have failed to reach a decision today it would appear that the parole board members have an element of doubt about whether he is safe to be released.”

“We believe if there is any doubt then he must not be released.”

“No amount of time will ever make up for what he did and the pain the family feel daily, but we would rather he was behind bars than within the community.”

The statement re-iterated the families’ worries, as it continued to say:

“If the parole board release him, they have not taken any of this or the safety of our family or others into consideration.

“We only hope that if he is released, he isn’t released into the Ayrshire area.”
