Held annually on the 5th of December, today we celebrate the United Nations International Volunteer Day (IVD).

The hashtag #InternationalVolunteerDay is currently trending on twitter, and tweets of appreciation for volunteers around the globe have flooded in.

We’ve rounded up some tweets that capture the essence of IVD, and pay homage to hard-working  volunteers worldwide.

Designated by the United Nations in 1985, the day of observation exists to celebrate the power and positive impacts of volunteering.

Today organisations and volunteers worldwide have the opportunity to celebrate theirachievements, shares their values and raise awareness of their work.

This year the day will particularly focus on volunteers who play a part in building resilience in their local communities, 60% of whom are women.
