Because Eric Says So

My mother always liked to say to me:
‘You don’t need need new clothes, you need to use the ones you have better’.

And even though I agree more and more with that sentiment, the truth is that there are pieces that everyone needs. And if you think you don’t, dear friend, you are wrong.

A black winter coat is a purchase you will never regret, especially when when you go outside for a cigarette and it’s -5 degrees and you feel like you are starring on The Day After Tomorrow II. A good option is to check in charity shops, but if you have the cash to spare I suggest a Label Lab coat.

£130 – House of Fraser

I got one on sale last year and it remains one of the best pieces of clothing I have. Strong, resistant, warm! What else can you ask for?

Holes in any piece of clothing are a huge no no, unless you are my flatmate Alan and have made this your personal style. So it’s time to get rid of that lumpy sweater Auntie Carol gave you for Christmas and invest in some actually nice jumpers. I will always die for a turtleneck in black and you should too.

£8 ASOS

The Alex Belt from Vivienne Westwood may seem like an extravagance at first, but it’s powers are well worth the price.

I can guarantee, first hand, it makes any outfit look expensive (yes, even those dungarees you bought from Primark). It’s the one piece I have everyone wants to borrow.

£100 Vivienne Westwood (also available in black)

If you can remember fondly of experiences you had with your underwear, it’s time to find them a new home in the closest bin. I personally don’t know a single guy that doesn’t have Calvin Kleins, but don’t fooled – these are much comfier and last longer. Available in briefs or boxers, gentleman’s choice.

£22 JOCKEY

Yes, you can use your phone to tell the time, but that’s not the point. A nice watch completes an outfit and you don’t even have to spend a lot of money. This Casio is everyone’s best friend and has been a favourite stocking filler of mine for many years.

£7.99 ARGOS

I would prefer a painful slow death than wearing ugly shoes and if that doesn’t tell you how important they are, you are beyond help. I have been in love with these since seeing them in the shop and what else are overdrafts for?

£134.99 Foot Asylum

Finally, it’s important to remember that buying new clothes should be fun. Buy things that you love and that you will care for. Break the rules, clash some patterns, wear a crop top that says Jurassic Park. Don’t be afraid to try something new, even if your friends think you’ve gone mad.
